As photographers we’re always looking for perfect light, and yet, the quality of available light isn’t always ideal. It is rarely perfect. Though in using flash wisely, we are able to enhance or over-ride the available light. With careful use of flash, we are more in control of light, and hence the way the final photos will look – than if we had just accepted the existing ambient light. Instead of waiting for that elusive perfect light, use what you have and add flash to make the best of the situation.
In this flash photography workshop you will learn the basic functions of how flash photography works. We break down the essential components of light (quality, direction, contrast, intensity, evenness and colour temperature) that are needed to create an image.
Understand the difference between E-TTL, TTL and Manual modes and how they can help create your image. Learn how and when to use colour gels to get a different look. Learn how to use your flash as a fill-in light source, how to use your flash as the main light source and how to work with multiple flash lights.
Areas of discussion include:
- TTL/Auto flash vs manual flash
- Metering for ambient light
- Implications of flash sync speed
- Fill in-flash to available light outdoors
